Senior WellnessThe field of Veterinary Medicine has changed over the years, and today the life expectancy of companion animals receiving regular Veterinary care is greatly enhanced. However, along with a longer life they also experience more age-related diseases. Just like humans, early detection of diseases can help your pet live a longer life- and help us to maintain the quality of your pet’s life. If your pet should now be considered a “Senior Citizen”, we recommend a “Senior Wellness Checkup” which includes the following: 1. Comprehensive Physical Examination 2. Complete Blood Count – a measurement and physical analysis of blood cells – helps to identify infections, anemia and many other diseases. 3. Serum Chemistry Analysis- Pinpoints organ dysfunction, diabetes, certain blood-borne illnesses and cancers. 4. Thyroid level – In cats, hyperthyroidism is one of the most commonly diagnosed feline diseases. It accelerates metabolic processes resulting in accelerated heart rate and weight loss. In dogs, hypothyroidism causes weight gain, poor coat quality, lethargy and cold intolerance. A urinalysis and/or fecal exam may also be recommended at no additional charge. Additionally, vaccination protocols are often altered for senior pets, especially as they become less active. As Veterinarians, our primary goals are prevention, early detection, and treatment of disease |
