Lyme Disease Lyme disease is transmitted thru bites of infected ticks. Only certain species of ticks are capable of transmitting Lyme Disease, and generally, Lyme Disease is only endemic to areas in which there are deer.Because of the serious nature of this disease, Park Slope Veterinary Care screens all canine patients for Lyme Disease on an annual basis when heartworm tests are run. Since the inception of this program, we have managed to diagnose and treat a surprisingly large number of infected dogs. We strongly encourage clients to consider the lifestyle of their dogs and vaccinate them for Lyme Disease should introduction to the infectious agent be possible. We recommend annual screening for heartworm disease and this also allows us to monitor our patients for possible exposure to Lyme disease on an annual basis. They are small intracellular bacteria which because of their intracellular location, multiply quite readily inside the host, essentially shielded from the host's immune system. Dogs with ehrlichiosis may present with lameness, fever, lethargy, nasal discharge and inappetance.
