DIET: 

bulletNo food until after 8 p.m. tonight.  Give only small amounts water at frequent intervals.
bulletYou may resume feeding the regular diet the morning after surgery.

 

ACTIVITY:

 

bulletDrowsiness may be noted today and tomorrow.           
bulletEnsure a clean, dry, and protected environment to avoid injury. Do not permit access to elevated surfaces until tomorrow.    
bulletRESTRICT EXERCISE. No rough play for 7 ‑ 10 days.  Leash only exercise.
bulletNormal Activity within reason.

 

INCISION CARE:

 

bulletWatch the incision for swelling, redness, or drainage.   Apply nothing to the incision without our knowledge. 
bulletPrevent excessive licking. If you are incapable of doing so, an Elizabethan collar will be necessary.

                                                                                             

MEDICATIONS:

 

bulletUse all medications as directed.
bulletAll medications begin tomorrow unless directed otherwise.

 

BANDAGES / SPLINTS:

 

§   Keep clean and dry. 

§   Notify the clinic if you observe any swelling, odor, or discharge.  Please check the toes and area around the bandage or splint daily.

§   Keep  confined to prevent damage to the splint.

§   Discourage Chewing.  Call the clinic if this becomes a potential problem.

§   Keep Elizabethan collar on  at all times.

§   The bandage must be kept dry. If it gets wet, it must be removed immediately. Common sources of moisture include wet bathroom and kitchen floors, water bowls and rain.

 

   

OTHER INSTRUCTIONS:

 

bulletRecheck in _____ Days.
bulletRemove Sutures in 14 days / Absorbable Suture used.  There is no additional charge for this procedure unless sedation is required.
bulletMany patients will not have bowel movements for 1 ‑ 3 days after surgery.  This is normal, provided he/she is acting normal in all other ways.
bulletOur major concern is the comfort and healing of our patients.  Please phone us ANY time you have a question or concern.  Notify us immediately should you observe any of the following:

 

Loss of appetite for more than 2 days

Refusal to drink water for more than 1 day

Weakness or Depression

Vomiting or Diarrhea after 24 hours

Constipation

 

bullet PLEASE NOTE:  We make every effort to avoid complications, but unexpected problems can always occur.  Complications might include infection, wound breakdown, or chewing out sutures.  Please be sure to contact us should you have any concerns.
